Van Lun LowMalaysiaExecutive DirectorTropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre, Universiti MalayaDr. Lucas Low VL is the Executive Director and Associate Professor at the Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre (TIDREC), a HICoE in Malaysia. He earned his BSc in Biodiversity Management (First-Class Honours) from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu in 2010 and completed his PhD with a “Distinction Thesis” at the University of Malaya in 2013, focusing on the molecular and biochemical basis of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes. His research spans insect vectors of medical-veterinary importance, including mosquitoes, ticks, flies, mites, lice, and fleas and the diseases they transmit. Dr. Low is a recognized authority in black fly research and honoured by two species named after him: Simulium vanluni (Malaysia) and Simulium lowi (Vietnam). With over 180 ISI-indexed publications, he is an Associate Editor of Tropical Biomedicine and Section Editor of Parasitology Research. As current President of the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (MSPTM), he actively promotes science communication and public health awareness, especially among vulnerable groups. A dedicated mentor, he has supervised 10 postgraduate students to completion and guides 8 ongoing students. His accolades include the UM Excellent Service Award (2019) and the Nadchatram Medal (2020) for outstanding contributions to parasitology and tropical medicine.
