Project-led public engagement events are often tailored specifically for the group of individuals or communities targeted by that project, rarely extending beyond these individuals, whilst in contrast science festivals are often large-scale city-level events, showcasing scientific and technological research carried out at local institutions. ‘Pint of Science’ is a global-level science festival, held annually across multiple cities simultaneously, but with a focus of local research that directly impacts the attending public. Initiated in the UK in 2013, Pint of Science is now held in 29 countries with over 3,000 events taking place. The events bring local and regional researchers directly to the general public and provides a platform which allows people to discuss research with the people who carry it out in a relaxed and interactive way, mainly within bars, pubs, cafes and other public spaces. In 2017 Pint of Science Thailand held its first event in Bangkok, with Pint of Science Laos starting in Vientiane in 2022. Over the last nine years there has been a total of 35 events, reaching over 2,000 people. Talks have been given by researchers working on infectious diseases (including rickettsial pathogens), environmental and conservation topics, technology and archaeology. Pint of Science provides a global branding and format, allowing recognition and building a following, and yet it allows local audiences to understand research happening on their door step. Whilst more tailored engagement activities will provide researches with public interactions enabling design, conducting and disseminating research, Pint of Science widens the scope of the audience allowing those who would not normally be engaged to ask questions to the researchers, and often stimulating more ideas or alternative interpretations of research directions. In addition, it provides a well-tested format, allowing researchers to develop engagement organization and public speaking skills.
